About K’gari

About K’gari (Formerly Fraser Island)

About K’gari (Formerly Fraser Island)

K’gari, formerly known as Fraser Island, is one of Australia’s most remarkable natural treasures. Located off the coast of Queensland, it is celebrated for its vast sand formations, crystal-clear freshwater lakes, and diverse wildlife.

The island’s Aboriginal name, K’gari, means “paradise” in the language of the Butchulla People, who have cared for and lived on this land for thousands of years. Today, it remains a World Heritage–listed destination [source: UNESCO] that represents both natural beauty and cultural depth.

History of K’gari (Fraser Island)

For over 5,000 years, K’gari has been home to the Butchulla Aboriginal People, whose traditions and stories are inseparable from the island’s landscapes. According to Butchulla belief, ancestral spirits shaped K’gari’s lakes, dunes, and forests as a gift for their people.

European arrival in the 1800s brought major change. The 1836 shipwreck of Eliza Fraser led to the island’s colonial name, while later logging and sand mining caused lasting environmental damage. In 1992, UNESCO recognized K’gari as a World Heritage Site, and in 2023, it officially reclaimed its traditional name, honoring the Butchulla People’s enduring guardianship of this unique environment.

Name Change: From Fraser Island to K’gari

In 2023, the island officially reclaimed its traditional name, K’gari, meaning “paradise” in the language of the Butchulla People, its Traditional Owners. The change marks an important step in recognizing the island’s Indigenous heritage and restoring respect to its original identity after decades under the colonial name “Fraser Island.”

Fraser Island Dingoes

Known locally as wongari, K’gari’s dingoes are among the purest wild populations in Australia, protected for their ecological and cultural significance.

They are descendants of ancient dingoes that arrived thousands of years ago and have remained genetically isolated, making them vital to scientific research and conservation.

Origin and Importance

Fraser Island dingoes have lived on the island for over 4,000 years, coexisting with the Butchulla People. In Butchulla tradition, the wongari holds a spiritual role as part of the island’s natural balance. Today, scientists recognize K’gari as one of the few places where pure dingo genetics are preserved.

Behavior and Conservation

Dingoes are highly social animals that live in small family groups and hunt fish, crabs, and small mammals. To protect their natural behavior, feeding dingoes is strictly prohibited. Conservation programs focus on education, secure food storage, and responsible tourism to ensure safety for both dingoes and visitors.

Safety Around Dingoes

Encounters are rare but possible, especially around campsites and beaches. Visitors are advised to:

  • Never approach, feed, or provoke dingoes — it disrupts their natural behavior and can lead to aggression.
  • Keep a minimum distance of 50 meters and never run if a dingo approaches; back away calmly.
  • Store food, rubbish, and scented items in sealed containers or vehicles to avoid attracting them.
  • Supervise children closely and avoid letting them run or play alone on beaches.
  • Avoid walking alone at dawn or dusk, when dingoes are more active.
  • Report concerning dingo behavior to rangers or information centers immediately.

These precautions protect both visitors and the wongari, ensuring safe coexistence on K’gari.
